Additional requirements on high quality protection laser safety filters

According to the EN standard for personal protection the Optical Density as the sole criteria for determining the safety of a laser filter is not sufficient. Also important is the fact that the Optical Density should be guaranteed throughout a direct hit. Frame and filter must withstand the laser beam which they were selected for over a period of

time, this is 5 seconds (continuous mode) or 50 pulses (pulsed mode) and must maintain the specified protection level under certain accurately defined conditions, as required by EN 207/208. Filters and frame must fulfil the following requirements:

.

  • no Q-Switch-Effect (EN 207/EN 208)
  • low dioptrical effects (EN 167)
  • quality of materials and surface (EN 167)
  • low stray light < 0,5 cd/m²lx,(EN 207/EN208)
  • no secondary radiation (EN 207/EN208)
  • UV-resistance (EN 207/EN208, EN 168)
  • thermal resistance (EN 207/EN208, EN 168)
  • field of vision > 40° (EN 207/EN208)
  • shatter resistance (EN 166)
